Details: Evolution is inevitable. Kreesha Turner’s forthcoming album is a sonic departure from the earlier pop dance music towards a hybrid of new sounds and melodies. Turner invites fans and music critics alike to indulge in her diversified musical fusion of dancehall and hip hop while shedding her pop skin and gaining control over her musical sound.
Following the success of her Juno nominated sophomore album, Tropic Electric =(2011), Turner headed south of the Canadian border to continue experimenting with new producers and new sounds. For this album, Turner is determined to carve out a spot for herself internationally with a revolutionary fusion of R&B, hip hop and dancehall, a noticeable musical departure from her earlier work.
When Turner met American heavyweight hip hop music producer Yonni aka Young Yonny (Lil Wayne, Trey Songz, Christina Milian) the two instantly felt a musical chemistry and formed a working relationship. Turner was immediately infatuated with the gritty, raw beats Yonni was creating and they decided they needed to create music in some capacity, whether it was Turner writing over his beats for other artists or begin collaborating for Turner’s new untitled project.
For 2 months Turner played one of Yonni’s beats incessantly, until her writing partner Daaron Anthony insisted that they write over what would become the first single ‘Gimme’ Dat’. Once Yonni heard Turner’s vocals over the track he knew there was something magical about her voice and decided that this would set the tone for their musical relationship. Turner recalls, “Yonni said he was kidnapping me! It was a very authentic feeling working together in the studio.
There were no expectations, everything just happened organically and collaboratively. We had a real, deep rooted musical chemistry.” The displaced sounds, melodies, textures and colors in Turner’s mind found solace in the foundation of Yonni’s rhythmic beats. She disregarded any formula or antidotes she had grown to rely on, liberating herself of her insecurities and any expectation from herself of others. Turner describes her new album as, “aggressive and in your face, full of sass and completely swagged out. The overall energy is different from my earlier albums. It’s very hip hop.”

Growing up between Jamaica and Canada lends to Turner’s distinctive sound, blending the underground hip hop she took part in while growing up in Edmonton and the dancehall and rhythms she was exposed to during her teenage years in Jamaica. Yonni blended his American hip hop beats with Turner’s dancehall background to create something that will completely disrupt the music scene, and deliver a combative invitation to her musical predecessors and counterparts. Her mission with this project is to connect on an emotional level with her audience but also set herself apart from the obvious comparisons like Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and Lil Kim whose music all have prominent dialects coupled with Caribbean and American hip hop influences.
A global minded artist, Turner is looking to break down barriers and share her music beyond the Canadian borders, Turner has already secured three number one singles internationally with tracks like the 2008 remix of ‘Don’t Call Me Baby’ and her 2010 collaboration with alternative pop legends Delerium, ‘Dust In Gravity’, which both hit #1 on the US Billboard Dance Chart. Most recently, Turner collaborated with Spanish DJ Wally Lopez, lending her vocals to “Keep Running The Melody” which reached the #1 spot on the iTunes within just three hours of its release.
The track would soon after become a #1 hit across several charts in Spain. In the past few years Turner has toured the world; sharing stages with the likes of Katy Perry, Shirley Bassey and Lady Gaga, and performing at high profile events like Canada Day festivities at the 2010 World Expo in China, for an audience made up of local dignitaries and then Governor General of Canada, Michaëlle Jean. Her 2007 single, ‘Bounce With Me’ has been tapped for television shows like ‘The Hills’, ‘Entourage’ and ‘Desperate Housewives’, major motion pictures such as ‘You Again’ and ‘What Happens in Vegas’ and successful commercial campaigns for Nikon, Nike and Kit Kat. The strength of Passion also garnered Turner a Canadian Radio Music Award for Best New Group/Solo Artist (Rhythmic/Dance/Urban) of the Year, an MMVA nomination for International Video of the Year and JUNO nods for both New Artist and Pop Album of the Year in 2009.

This 2014 album is a collection of American hip hop beats blended with urban reggae roots and soulful undertones, all written by Turner and her writing partner Daaron Anthony and executive produced by Yonni. The music student that co-wrote only a handful of tracks on her debut album Passion, has now evolved into a confident songwriter. Turner enlisted the help of Canadian hip hop artist Kardinal Offishall on the lead single, “Gimme’ Dat” in addition to a feature by American hip hop artist King Chip who is known for collaborations with Big Sean and Kid Cudi.
Turner’s musical evolution involved finding her voice and taking the reigns on her career. Her swag on this new record is a reflection of her new found confidence and her appreciation for growth and longevity within the industry. Turner knows what she expects from herself and in turn what she expects from those around her. The lesson learned over her musical career is to find happiness based on her own decisions, a discovery she realized during the recording of this new album.

There is no stopping the evolution of this Canadian superstar who is destined for greatness and determined to carve out her spot on the global music scene.
