Join us on March 17th at 7 PM as we talk to the Trinidad born DJ/MC about the most energetic genre/culture in the world....SOCA and more.
BIO:
These days, soca beat is everywhere. Once overlooked, the groovy, funky sound of Trinidad has now been amplified by Electronic Dance Music in all its variations--dub step, ancestral, UK funky. The up-tempo, sexy vibrations of Carnival are finally reaching a global stage, and music-lovers and producers alike are running to catch up.
Darryl "D-Life" Payne, is one of the few deejays on the cusp of this movement. Trinidadian-born and Brooklyn-raised, D-Life has "soca in his blood." Not limited to soca however, he has been put to the test with the best reggae and hip-hop sound systems in New York City. He played for years alongside reggae champions Massive B on Hot 97. More recently, he has been mixing for the legendary Doug E. Fresh on "The Show," soon to go into syndication. More specifically, his radio experience includes:
- Fire Sundays with Massive B on WQHT (Hot) 97.1 (2005-2011) - The Joint SiriusXM Radio (2010-Present) - The Show with Doug E. Fresh on WBLS 107.5 (2013- Present)
As the official tour deejay for Alison Hinds, popularly known as "The Caribbean Queen," D-Life has travelled the world, performing at festivals in Europe, Latin America and across North America. As a result he has been a pioneer in incorporating global dance music into his set. His also regularly performs at various Carnivals around the country. His performance highlights include:
- Alison Hinds World Tour—Official Tour DJ
- Carnival (New York, Toronto, Boston, Miami, Houston, Los Angeles)--Performer
- Best Of The Best Annual Concert (largest Caribbean concert in North America)
- Fire Sundays @The Brooklyn Buzz with Massive B –Weekly Residency
Yet D-Life is not only on the cutting edge of the soca fusion sound, he also helped create it. While on Hot 97, he helped break songs by soca ambassadors Alison Hinds, Collie Buddz and Bunji Garlin. In 2007, he became the first soca deejay to release an album on a major US label, dropping Extreme Soca v.1, on Penalty/EMI. And in 2010, he was commissioned by Atlantic Records to produce the official soca remix for Kanye West and Estelle's collaboration, American Boy. His production credits include:
D-Life is amongst the rarest of the musical species: an artist who roots run deep, but whose most creative days lie ahead. Keep your ears open--if you hear the soca beat, D-Life must be nearby.
