The artist, Ricardo Vega is well-known on the streets of Kansas City as Rico Ricardo. Music is a release for Rico. Music is his escape from reality, but he always felt the need to speak on his reality through music. Music literally saved his life.
Life has not always been easy for Rico. Growing up in a single-parent home, and not really being close to his father, Rico turned to the streets for guidance. It was sometimes rough and stressful at the same time. Rico often felt like an outcast and alone and the way he dealt with his frustration was he wrote. He wrote poetry, songs, he wrote about anything to ease his mind. Hip Hop is what brought him through. He took his reality, added a beat and melody to it and it became truth for all ears to hear.
Being involved with street life since an early age, Rico started getting into a lot of trouble with the law, leading him back and forth to jail for most of his life. He knew he didn’t want to become a product of his environment, so he promised to make a change. Focusing on his music and establishing his record label, Whatcha Saay Records in 2007, Rico knew exactly what he wanted to do when it came to the music industry; take over the game. He buckled down, wrote and recorded numerous songs and features for his own projects and other local artist’s works as well. He shot tons of videos. He also traveled from state to state doing shows, radio interviews and working with some of the top underground, up and coming, and industry professionals alike. Rico was destined to make a name for himself and he did just that.
The beginning of 2012, Rico revamped his label, music and image and created the entity known as Mixed Understood Entertainment, LLC. Starting a clothing line along with his label, Rico Ricardo has officially become a brand. Catering to every race around the globe, Mixed Understood Clothing is now on its way to becoming a household name. His plans are to expand even further with his vision for his audio-biography project entitled “Mixed Against The World” where he is going to release a video/short film for each song on the album. A stand out track in particular is “Rain”, which is a song speaking on the ill effects of domestic violence. Rico always tries to shed light on the darkness in all of our lives, that’s why his music is so relatable; every song has a positive message in it. Ever since Rico has turned a new leaf, he’s trying to help rebuild the communities he once helped destroy. Every year in the winter time when it’s the roughest for the homeless, Rico goes into the community and gives away coats, scarves, hats and gloves to those in need. Rico is the definition of a genuine soul. He always gives back.
As Rico Ricardo and the Mixed Understood umbrella grow, the world gets to come along for the ride and witness greatness in the making. His lane is already paved; watch him run it.
