Danette Chavis - Founder/National Action Against Police Brutality and Murder (NAAPB)In October of 2004, Danette Chavis lost her only son Gregory Chavis at the hands of NYPD. He was an innocent victim caught in a cross-fire shooting intended for someone else, which occurred two blocks from a Hospital. Those who were with him carried him one block directly in front of the Hospital when NYPD pulled up demanding they put him down. When they refused insisting he had been shot and they were taking him to the hospital directly in front of them, NYPD cocked their weapons demanding they put him down. When they refused again, they threatened to shoot. He was then placed on the ground and the two who were with him placed in patrol cars. Gregory "bled to death" on the ground one block directly in front of the Hospital. The medical examiner said he had "every probable chance of survival" had he gotten the medical attention which was needed, and a 7 year lawsuit ensued in Federal Court for the violation of his Constitutional rights and the failure to get him the medical attention which was needed. Throughout that 7 year period, Danette has stood and fought along side other families seeking justice for the loss of a loved one murdered by police. And it is those years which have convinced her that "nothing" short of a nation wide demand shall bring "accountability" for police. Although she never received justice for the loss of her son, she has launched a petition seeking "police accountability" across the board. She believes that an "injury to one is an injury to all" and has been relentless in seeking  police accountability across the board.  *National Action Against Police Brutality and Murder (NAAPB) is a grass roots organization created in response to the epidemic of police brutality and murder across the nation.
