Don Johnson, who now goes by his moniker, Don J, was born into a musical family in Georgetown, Guyana on August 16, 1990. The 26-year old who grew up in North Ruimveldt, is the son of renowned Guyanese musician/manager, producer and businessman, Ian Johnson; who also owns the Dynamix Recording label which has brought Guyanese a generation of hits including Shelly G’s historic 2009 winning Carib Soca Monarch track, ‘Work It’, ‘Touch meh’ and many others.[/quote]
At age 12, Don got his first job working every day after school at his father’s ‘Everything Music & Electronic’ store in Georgetown which also housed a recording studio on the top floor. While most adolescents were dealing with puberty, Don was juggling family, school, work and more importantly, music. He sat in the studio many nights, looking on in fascination as his father penned songs and recorded sessions with budding artists and musicians who would later go on to become some of the biggest names in Guyanese music. Today, he attributes his love for music to those fond memories.Naturally, an urge to pursue a career in music followed. At 17yrs, Don, with encouragement from his mentor and friend ’Spider’, who was at the time making headlines for his hit ‘Party Time’, he snuck into his father’s empty studio one night and recorded his first song ‘If This Is Love’.DonJ grew into a passionate, talented singer and songwriter whose drive and innovation surpassed the average teenager. In high school, he was producing talent shows such as the ‘Hip-Hop Factory' and helping his father coordinate other shows including ‘Talent Exclusive’ and ‘Watz Hott’ which later became household names in Guyana. His talents soared when he was promoted to co-producer and arranger at Dynamix Records, and at 20, assumed the role of manager of ‘Dynamix Records’ where he worked with many Guyanese artists including ‘Fojo D Artiste’, ‘Shelly G’, ‘Spider and The Fire Clan Band', ‘JB’, ‘Timothy Vantull’ and many others.
‘DonJ’ is now at a plateau where he is ready to introduce himself as an entertainer who brings an ‘authentic’ brand of music with a distinct style, sound, approach and delivery.
